CHAPTER 19
After multiple exceedingly frustrating texts to and from Megan â frustrating because she was at work and couldnât answer straightaway â Rose found herself sitting in the living room, dressed in blue jeans, a pale yellow T-shirt with daisies on and her favourite navy-blue Converse.
âHave you got a jacket?â her mum asked.
âItâs twenty degrees already, Mum,â Rose said. âTheyâve just said it could be the hottest day of the year so far.â
âYouâre just getting over a chill, my lady.â Her mum stood in front of her with her hands on her hips. âNow go and get yourself a jumper.â Rose did as she was told, knowing full well that sheâd take it off as soon as she was out of her mumâs sight. âAnd youâd better pack this in your bag, as well.â Janet handed her a bottle of factor thirty sun cream. âYou know how easily you burn.â
Rose loved her mum; she fussed way too much and seemed to forget that Rose was an adult now, but after seeing first-hand how some peopleâs parents treated their children, she wouldnât have it any other way. A beeping horn announced Jamesâs arrival and she peeked out of the window expecting to see his black Audi. But the car that was currently parked on the driveway was a huge surprise.
âIs thatâ¦â Rose asked as James greeted her, holding the car door open, âthe one from the movie? The one that Jenny drives when she goes back to the sixties?â
âWell, itâs not the exact one.â Rose climbed into the British racing green Mini and James closed the door. Sheâd never been in a Mini before. âThe exact one is locked up in a Hollywood backlot somewhere.â
âIs this yours?â she asked as he sat down beside her and started the engine. It roared instantly to life, much louder than a modern-day engine but absolutely glorious.
âSadly not.â He completed a swift and smooth three-point turn and headed off down the drive, turning left at the bottom. âIâve hired it for the day.â
âWhy?â She was intrigued. âIs your car broken?â
âMy car is safe and sound at home.â He patted the steering wheel. âWeâre having a very special day out and we needed a very special car to do it in.â
âIs that all the information Iâm getting?â
âFor the moment it is.â He shifted into third gear as they drove down the main street of Tointon. âNow sit back and enjoy the ride.â
