CHAPTER 19

After multiple exceedingly frustrating texts to and from Megan – frustrating because she was at work and couldn’t answer straightaway – Rose found herself sitting in the living room, dressed in blue jeans, a pale yellow T-shirt with daisies on and her favourite navy-blue Converse.

‘Have you got a jacket?’ her mum asked.

‘It’s twenty degrees already, Mum,’ Rose said. ‘They’ve just said it could be the hottest day of the year so far.’

‘You’re just getting over a chill, my lady.’ Her mum stood in front of her with her hands on her hips. ‘Now go and get yourself a jumper.’ Rose did as she was told, knowing full well that she’d take it off as soon as she was out of her mum’s sight. ‘And you’d better pack this in your bag, as well.’ Janet handed her a bottle of factor thirty sun cream. ‘You know how easily you burn.’

Rose loved her mum; she fussed way too much and seemed to forget that Rose was an adult now, but after seeing first-hand how some people’s parents treated their children, she wouldn’t have it any other way. A beeping horn announced James’s arrival and she peeked out of the window expecting to see his black Audi. But the car that was currently parked on the driveway was a huge surprise.

‘Is that…’ Rose asked as James greeted her, holding the car door open, ‘the one from the movie? The one that Jenny drives when she goes back to the sixties?’

‘Well, it’s not the exact one.’ Rose climbed into the British racing green Mini and James closed the door. She’d never been in a Mini before. ‘The exact one is locked up in a Hollywood backlot somewhere.’

‘Is this yours?’ she asked as he sat down beside her and started the engine. It roared instantly to life, much louder than a modern-day engine but absolutely glorious.

‘Sadly not.’ He completed a swift and smooth three-point turn and headed off down the drive, turning left at the bottom. ‘I’ve hired it for the day.’

‘Why?’ She was intrigued. ‘Is your car broken?’

‘My car is safe and sound at home.’ He patted the steering wheel. ‘We’re having a very special day out and we needed a very special car to do it in.’

‘Is that all the information I’m getting?’

‘For the moment it is.’ He shifted into third gear as they drove down the main street of Tointon. ‘Now sit back and enjoy the ride.’
